Resident Assistant Job Description
The Resident Assistant (RA) is an important member of the Edina ABC organization and has the opportunity to make a deep and positive impact in the lives of high-potential teens.
The RA lives in the Edina ABC house full time and is compensated with room and board provided while the students are in residence and room provided when the students are not in residence. The RA assists the Resident Director (RD) in providing a supportive, structured, family-like atmosphere and in overseeing the students’ academics and daily lives. The RA reports to the RD and the Executive Director (ED). The RA may also keep a school or part-time work schedule of up to 20 hours per week outside of the Edina ABC house as long as the RA duties are fulfilled. Working hours for the RA are expected to be approximately 20-25 hours per week. A schedule will be determined in collaboration with the RD and ED, but will generally include afternoons and early evenings, a portion of each weekend, and no-school days. The RA is generally off duty over summer and winter breaks and most major holidays. There are also other opportunities for occasional time off according to Edina ABC policy. The RA is expected to commit to the position for at least one school year. Desired Qualities, Skills, and Experience
Bachelor’s degree completed or in process
Excellent driving record
Experience working with youth ages 13-18
Experience working with people from a diverse range of backgrounds and ages
Demonstrated commitment to working with youth, especially underserved youth
Ability to contribute to a nurturing, supportive, respectful, and family-like culture and environment
Ability to implement positive discipline strategies as established by the RD
Ability to work collaboratively and strategically with adults and youth
Living full time in the Edina ABC House with 6-8 students throughout the school year, including weekends and school vacations. The RA may also live at the Edina ABC House over the summer while students are away.
Assisting the RD and ED in ensuring students’ academic and personal success.
Assisting the RD in maintaining a respectful and supportive family-like culture and environment
Serving as positive role model and assistant supervisor and supporter of students’ daily personal and academic needs and obligations.
Implementing a positive discipline strategy and redirecting students effectively and respectfully when necessary, in accordance with guidelines set by the RD.
Monitoring student health issues and concerns, reporting to the RD and ED when appropriate and assisting the RD and ED in securing health care for students when necessary.
Maintaining a satisfactory level of cleanliness in the ABC House and overseeing students’ regular household chores.
Assisting the RD in grocery and household supply shopping and in occasional meal preparation.
Driving students to and from after school sports and activities and social commitments using the Edina ABC vehicle
Coordinating volunteer drivers for student transportation needs
Assisting the ED with occasional fundraising and recruiting activities.
Other tasks as determined by the RD and/or ED
Compensation Compensation for this position is free housing in the Edina ABC house with a private bedroom and all utilities paid. Meals are also provided to resident staff, but only when students are also in residence. No monetary compensation is provided. Other Requirements All candidates will be required to pass a criminal background check and must have a valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
