Job Description
Purpose of the Executive Director: To ensure that Edina A Better Chance fulfills its mission on an on-going basis.
Major Responsibilities:
With the support of the Board of Directors, Student Committee and the assistance of the Resident Director(s), select, house and guide 4 to 8 students per year typically through four years at Edina Senior High School.
This position is a position with flexible hours. Generally it is a 30 hour per week position but may be more or less during peak times, summer and school vacations. On school days, 3 hours per day are required in the A Better Chance office located in the Edina High School. However, much of the work can be performed from home. There are weekly breakfast meetings and monthly board, student committee and other committee meetings in the evenings. There are frequent evening and weekend activities and contact with the scholars. Vacations must be scheduled around student needs.
Office
The Edina A Better Chance office is located in the Edina High School.
Staff
There are resident staff who live with the scholars and are responsible for monitoring student achievement and the day to day welfare of the scholars. The resident staff receive room and board as compensation. In addition, the Resident Director receives a monthly stipend.
Volunteer Staff
There is a working Board of Directors that provides support to the Executive Director. The Executive Director reports to the Board President.
There is a Student Committee that monitors all aspects of student achievement. The Executive Director and Resident Director(s) are members of this committee.
A Lead Tutor coordinates the work of tutors who provide two hours of student supervision five nights per week during the school year.
The Executive Director recruits and coordinates the activity of two host families per scholar. The host families host their scholars on alternating Sundays.
The Executive Director gathers a list of people willing to provide rides for the scholars for ad hoc activity during the evening and weekends.
Requirements

- Students: Ensure that academic standards of B or better, standards of conduct and overall expectations of the Edina A Better Chance program are met
- Tutors: Ensure that tutoring needs are met with both consistency and quality
- Educational System Relationships: Maintain a strong bond with all levels of the Edina public school system from the superintendent to the teachers
- College Prep: Guide the scholars in preparing for college admissions tests, identifying appropriate college choices and applying for admission and aid
- Resident Director(s): Ensure that the Resident Director(s) provide a consistent level of supervision for the scholars, manage a safe, family-like home environment and monitor day to day academic assignments
- Facilities: With the direct involvement of the Resident Director(s), oversee and coordinate all home maintenance projects and repairs to ensure that the living conditions for the scholars are comfortable and safe
- Host Families: Responsible for recruiting host families and matching them to scholars
- Scholar Parents: Maintain relationships with parents to ensure they are informed on a timely basis of any concerns with their scholar or news about the program and to address parents’ concerns
- Recruit New Volunteers for the Program: Ensure that there are talented and committed volunteers to serve the needs of our scholars. This includes tutors, host families, Student Committee members, event committees, ride providers and a Board of Directors. Ensure that there are numerous connections to the student body, school staff and Edina school district parents.
- Recruit New Individual Donors: Identify new donors from the school community and from the A Better Chance past and present volunteers and students
- Grant Writing: Identify sources resulting in major gifts and contributions
- Donor Relationships: Provide prompt “thank yous” to all donors and maintain a donor database for use in soliciting donations and invitations for annual gala. Monitor pledges until received.
- Compose and Distribute the Holiday Letter: The holiday letter, sent in November, is an important solicitation of the Edina A Better Chance community
- Serve on the Annual Gala Committee: With board and volunteer support, manage the gala program
- Community Relationships: Attend community events in order to create awareness and provide an opportunity for increased financial and in-kind support. A key component of this is to maintain Edina A Better Chance’s connection with the Rotary. It is a critical part of the position to continue involvement with the Rotary through weekly breakfast meetings, volunteering for Rotary fundraising events and relationship building with the other Rotary members.
- Website and Social Media: Assist in using multiple outlets to publicize the program and to fundraise such as through the Give to the Max online annual giving campaign.
- Board of Director Relationships: Inform the Board of Directors of the program’s needs and seek its involvement in program responsibilities where needed.
- National Office: Must communicate with and stay abreast of all developments at the National level. Provide paperwork on a timely basis to National Office to remain compliant with their requirements and standards.
- Financial Management: In addition to handling monthly finances, must stay abreast of the program’s financial picture and communicate that to the board. Ensure services and items are obtained for the program at the best possible price.

Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree
- Proven fundraising ability
- Proven ability to cultivate relationships across multiple populations
- Proven communication skills via multiple methods including written, verbal and electronic
- Spanish is a plus
